Verdal – a resource local for Universal design.
In the period 20029-2013 the municipality is a resource local for Universal design. In addition to flag Universal design in Verdal, other municipalities may pay us a visit, or invite us to visit them to share our competence and suggest good actions. Awareness, increased competence and good practicle examples are the foundation in this work.
A local working group has been assembled, and a resource group with users and persons from other units in the municipalities will be established.

UNIVERSAL DESIGN, GOOD FOR EVERYONE – A NECESSITY FOR SOME
Universal design is all about creating a society which includes everyone, and give all citizens the possibility to participate. Noone likes to be excluded or hindered from participation.
Universal design must be a part of the main solution, not a high-cost extra solution embedded after projects are finished. City planners, builders and authorities must respect this when they are planning and building roads, buildings, parking areas and recreation areas.
Everyone must take care to make it easy to move around no matter if you are able or disabled.
Persons with reduced sight, or reduced orientation must also be able to find their way through good signs, and without being afraid to stumble and fall.
All public buildings should be equipped to enable people with hearing aid to participate. When choosing materials and plants, concideration should be taken to avoid problems for people having allergies – this is valid both inside and outside.
The slogan is: GOOD FOR EVERYONE – A NECESSITY FOR SOME.
Verdal municipality was one of 16 pilots participating in a national effort concerning Universal design. The Ministry of environment coordinated the effort, and the pilots should be “lighthouses” regarding best practice and god solutions.
The pilot projevt was split in two parts;
Part 1 focused on information and building competence about Universal design, and seminars about Universal design in schools and with focus on affability are examples of this.
Part 2 focused on how the central part of the small town Verdal should be in the future.
The streets Nordgata and Johannes Bruns gate are good examples of Universal design. Efforts have been done to make the railway station more available to everyone, and a tunnel for pedestrians under the railroad is also a result of the project. Universal design is about to be a natural part of all public plans, as well as tight cooperation with user groups.
